Myanmar Muslims' Mosques Collapsed in Earthquake

The passage focused on the suffering faced by Muslim communities in Myanmar due to ongoing restrictions on the construction and renovation of mosques, especially after the earthquake that struck the country in March 2025 with a magnitude of 7.7. The earthquake led to the collapse of hundreds of buildings and injured many Muslims. A total of 180 mosques and religious structures in 29 towns were affected, with the collapses resulting in the deaths of over 670 Muslims. The damage was most concentrated in Mandalay, Sane, and Naypyidaw. The restrictions imposed by the military council for decades have prevented repairs and restorations of mosques, causing them to deteriorate and increasing the risk of further collapses. After the earthquake, these restrictions on debris removal and rebuilding remained in place, with many Muslims still praying in temporary locations. Human rights organizations accuse the military regime of failing to provide adequate assistance to Muslim communities and demand facilitation of repair processes, along with financial and engineering support for the affected mosques to ensure they are resilient against future earthquakes.
