Mauritania's Government Reshuffle

The Mauritanian presidency announced the formation of a new government headed by Moktar Ould El-Ghaith, following the previous government's resignation. This change comes in the wake of the electricity outage crisis that led to youth incidents and fires at two major stations in Nouakchott in August 2024. The new cabinet comprises 29 ministerial portfolios with significant changes, including the removal of the ministers of Interior and Defense, and the appointment of new ministers in key sectors such as energy, health, media, and housing. The resignation followed an assessment by authorities of the shortcomings in electricity management, especially after ongoing power outages that plunged the city into darkness for days. New ministers have been appointed to address these issues and improve government performance.
