Basra's Hidden Challenges

A report highlights the situation of the city of Basra, which is rich in oil and gas resources, yet suffers from deteriorating infrastructure, particularly a lack of potable water, poor services, and limited employment opportunities, especially in remote areas. Despite the city exporting more than three million barrels of oil daily, many of its residents live in extreme poverty or face water and environmental pollution, with protests ongoing demanding jobs and improved services. The hardships faced by inhabitants of the peripheral regions are especially evident, as they lack basic services and live under dire environmental and political conditions. Meanwhile, the city hosts modern urban projects and facilities in its center, reflecting stark socio-economic disparities and governmental neglect of the outskirts.
