A recent study has shown that wars have led to around 255 million people being deprived of food, by destroying agricultural lands and undermining food supply chains. Armed conflicts have caused the loss of approximately 249,667 square kilometers of agricultural land over the two decades studied (2000-2020), with an annual decrease of about 14.5 hectares per affected region, and a greater impact of 23.7% compared to regions unaffected by war. The study confirmed that the intensity and duration of conflicts result in greater losses, and that ceasing hostilities allows for a revival of agricultural lands. However, recovery efforts are necessary to achieve this. Additionally, levels of displacement and the deterioration of institutional systems are linked to increased agricultural losses, especially in countries with ineffective governments.
