French police face criticism over student violence

France experienced its largest youth protest movement in years, with hundreds of students participating in demonstrations across the country to demand better conditions in schools, including replacing absent teachers and repairing dilapidated buildings. The protests involved violent actions by police forces, resulting in serious injuries to many teenagers due to the use of police weapons such as stun grenades and rubber bullets. Some protesters were also subjected to beatings and racist insults. Authorities are investigating 36 claims of brutal treatment against demonstrators, with reports of victims suffering limb loss and severe injuries, and some cases involving attempted murder charges. Reports indicate that excessive violence and unwarranted police actions have led to serious injuries among the children and young people protesting.
