UN frontrunner urges reform
The frontrunner for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, Rebecca Greenspan, calls for a profound reform of the international organization, emphasizing that it has become excessively cautious and hesitant to take risks in fulfilling its missions. She advocates for reducing staff sizes and cutting down on bureaucracy, highlighting the necessity to overhaul its structures to focus efforts on core tasks and to cut costs—which, if not done adequately, might worsen problems rather than resolve them. She also stresses the importance of leaders adopting a more proactive approach, especially in peacekeeping and mediation efforts, and promoting cooperation with the permanent members of the Security Council to achieve effective diplomatic outcomes.
