Trump seeks to end forest protections
The Trump administration proposed a rule change to eliminate protections for over 44 million acres of national forest land, including the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. The move aims to allow logging, road building, and other development activities, especially in western U.S. forests, by giving local managers more discretion. Critics argue that this rollback threatens wilderness areas and imperiled species, while supporters cite wildfire prevention and forest management benefits. The proposal is open for public comment before finalization.
