Kratom drugs linked to Ole Miss students
Two individuals who died near the University of Mississippi had substances containing three semisynthetic kratom derivatives—mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and 7-OH—found in their drug products. These compounds are concentrated and potent derivatives not naturally occurring in kratom and have been classified as Schedule I controlled substances by the US Department of Justice, making them illegal for two years. Although it is unclear if these substances caused the deaths, reports of poisoning and addiction related to kratom and its derivatives are increasing, raising concerns about their accessibility and potential health risks.
