Dennis Hastert, former House speaker, dies at 84
Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican House speaker, died at age 84 of natural causes. His legacy was overshadowed by a criminal conviction for sexual abuse of teenage boys during his time as a wrestling coach and for paying hush money through banking violations. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2016 and had previously served as speaker from 1999 to 2007, playing a key role in legislative efforts during the Bush administration.
