Scientists leverage sharks for better hurricane predictions
The University of Delaware is using sharks to improve hurricane predictions by collecting accurate environmental data through sensors carried by these sharks. This method enhances our understanding of climate changes and helps forecast storm intensity before they reach land, as the sharks provide real-time monitoring of temperature, salinity, and depth. This information contributes to developing more accurate models for potential hurricanes. Studies have shown that species such as shortfin mako sharks, blue sharks, and hammerhead sharks are ideal candidates for this research due to their surface presence and widespread availability. This innovative approach presents a new and effective way to enhance natural disaster prediction capabilities, leading to better early warnings and improved community responses to climate challenges.
