France arrests over 1,700 protesters
Student protests in France continue, which began on September 17 and escalated to the closure of high schools and acts of violence. Over 1,700 people were detained on Friday, bringing the total to more than 5,000 since the protests started. The students are demanding improvements in the school environment, such as reduced hours and increased maintenance, but the government condemns violence and accuses the radical leftist France Proud Party of backing the movement. The government announced an upcoming plan to replace teachers, while student unions called for participation in demonstrations next Tuesday.
