Cairo University, in collaboration with researchers from Switzerland and the Egyptian Fertilizer Company, discovered a shark cemetery dating back more than 70 million years in the Abu Trutur area of the Western Desert. This discovery is the result of a geology student's graduation project, which evolved into a scientific study published in international journals. The find included over 63 preserved teeth from two extinct shark species, along with a record of the latest appearance of a shark from the species Cretoxyrhina mantelli in Africa, measuring approximately 6.7 meters in length. The discovery highlights Egypt's historical and environmental significance and enhances Cairo University's standing in Earth sciences and paleontology, while providing new information about marine biodiversity during the Late Cretaceous period.
