Egyptian-American doctor Adam Hamawy won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, becoming the first Muslim to represent the state in Congress. He received about 74.8% of the vote, compared with 25% for his Republican opponent, and is set to take office in January 2027. Hamawy took part in medical missions to Gaza in 2024 and 2025, treating injured people, including children. He said his experience there prompted him to enter politics. His platform calls for ending U.S. military aid to Israel and protecting Palestinian civilians, as well as expanding health coverage and lowering the cost of living.
