Burnham warns of prison overcrowding risk
The UK government has reversed its plans to allow approximately 5,000 prisoners to be released early to reduce overcrowding, citing concerns over prison capacity. Former justice secretary David Gauke warned that maintaining capacity at a "red hot" level poses significant risks, especially for releasing certain offenders like those serving indefinite sentences. The government is investing £110 million to accelerate a prison-building program, adding 14,000 prisoner spaces by 2031, but critics remain concerned about safety and resource strain.
