Iraqi prisons face overcrowding
Iraqi prisons are suffering from a severe overcrowding crisis, with many correctional facilities now housing more inmates than their capacity, threatening the improvement of humanitarian conditions and the reintegration of prisoners. Former MP Mudir Al-Kurawi called for a review and amendment of the General Amnesty Law to allow for the release of more inmates, emphasizing the importance of reform and rehabilitation programs. He also highlighted the need to develop prison management and to segregate inmates according to the nature of their crimes, in order to enhance human rights and reduce the risks of disease transmission within these institutions.
