Omani plan for Strait of Hormuz fees
Gulf sources have highlighted a proposal from Oman to establish a joint regional mechanism for managing the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to ensure freedom of navigation and reduce tensions in one of the most vital global maritime corridors. The model suggests cooperation among bordering countries and international users, with voluntary contributions to fund navigation services and environmental protection. This approach draws on the experience of the Malacca Strait in Southeast Asia. Implementing the proposal faces legal and political challenges, including issues related to revenue distribution and balancing the rights of littoral states with the principle of free international navigation. It requires regional and international consensus to guarantee the uninterrupted movement of ships and to prevent the mechanism from being exploited for political or military pressure.
