Neural signal links food to memory
A recent study published in the journal Nature Communications has shown that consuming meals rich in fats and sugars triggers a neural signal transmitted via the vagus nerve from the intestines to the brain, which enhances the release of the neurotransmitter "acetylcholine," responsible for memory formation. The findings confirmed that calories, rather than taste, activate this neural pathway. The study also revealed that early reliance on a diet high in fats and sugars weakens the activity of this pathway and negatively impacts memory performance, even after returning to a healthy diet. This underscores the importance of food quality in maintaining long-term brain function.
