Ships stranded by war risk disease spread
A new study has warned that the shutdown of approximately 1,500 commercial ships for months, due to the war with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, could lead to the widespread spread of invasive marine species. The seized ships have become covered with microbes and algae, creating ideal conditions for biological pollution and paving the way for the proliferation of environmentally and economically harmful species once they resume their voyages. The study recommends immediate measures to mitigate these risks, especially since current regulations are insufficient to address the potential impacts.
