Old phones pose environmental risks
The article addresses the problem of electronic waste generated by old phones and electronic devices, along with its environmental and health impacts. It explains that the global waste volume reached 62 million tons in 2024, with projections indicating it could rise to 82 million tons by 2030 if current consumption rates persist. The report emphasizes that less than 23% of this waste is formally recycled, while the larger quantities accumulate in landfills or are burned, leading to soil, water, and air pollution with dangerous metals and minerals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. This pollution poses serious risks to human health and living organisms. Additionally, the article highlights the challenges Lebanon faces in managing electronic waste due to the lack of an effective national system, which exacerbates pollution and economic resource loss. It concludes with a call to establish collection centers, enhance monitoring, motivate companies to recycle, and raise public awareness, in order to reduce the environmental and health risks associated with the unregulated disposal of old devices.
