Israeli Push to Expand West Bank Settlements Before Election
Israel is preparing to expand settlements in the West Bank ahead of the elections, as the Ministry of Housing announced a tender to build 1,234 housing units in the E1 project, with a call for bids for an additional 3,400 units in October. This ongoing expansion has faced international objections, including a joint statement from Britain, France, Canada, and several other European countries, calling for a ban on the trade of goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, considering it an important step to protect the two-state solution. This unprecedented expansion in construction and settlement activity, especially in areas far from the main settlement blocs, comes at a time when European concerns are growing that the E1 project might create facts on the ground that are difficult to reverse and could threaten the possibility of resuming peace negotiations. These developments represent a complex factor reflecting an Israeli escalation that alarms the international community and impacts the future of the two-state solution and Israel's relations with Europe.
