IMF urged to strengthen Lebanese bank oversight
The article discusses the International Monetary Fund's attempt to strengthen oversight of Lebanese banks by appointing managers or supervisors to some banks, as part of efforts to rebuild trust in the banking sector and restore relations with the international financial system. This step has become a subject of debate, especially given concerns that the supervisor could become an influential figure with broad powers, potentially impacting banking decisions and disrupting financial operations. This is particularly relevant in the context of monitoring financial movements linked to Hezbollah and targeting networks that fund themselves through large transactions outside the official system, according to American policies. The implementation of these measures requires clear safeguards regarding the supervisors' authority and oversight methods to prevent the process from turning into a threat to the stability of the Lebanese banking sector.
