Salama: Constitution change needed to empower institutions
The article addressed the necessity of amending the Lebanese Constitution to strengthen institutions and address the points of tension caused by excessive centralization. This was stated by Minister of Culture Ghassan Salama on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the constitution. He pointed out that the Constitution should be amendable to ensure a balance between central authority and the various groups, and that these amendments are essential to confront the current challenges that have weakened the authority of the central government. He emphasized that such amendments aim to achieve noble national objectives, while also stressing the importance of agreement on when, how, and for what purpose the Constitution should be amended. He considered that the Constitution is not a sacred text and that it has been amended in other countries for various reasons.
