Why Apple Cultivation Is the Solution Turkey Model
The article focuses on the importance of transforming Lebanese apples into an industrial and export-oriented industry rather than relying solely on fresh sales. This shift would help alleviate the issue of crop congestion and falling prices during the harvest season. It highlights that Turkey, despite its massive apple production (4.4 million tons in 2024 compared to Lebanon's 194,000 tons), has succeeded in exporting apple juice and products worth up to $437 million by developing an integrated industrial sector. While Lebanon depends on direct exports, the absence of a processing industry hampers the ability to absorb the volume of production. This problem is rooted in the lack of a national industry that enhances the economic value of the harvest, provides employment opportunities, and ensures continuous exports. The article emphasizes the necessity of establishing factories to convert apples into value-added products such as juice, purees, vinegar, and chips. Such processing could accommodate a significant portion of the production, and it is recommended that these are produced periodically and sustainably to achieve substantial economic benefits.
