Netanyahu discloses call with Syrian leader
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conducted his first direct phone call with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharif, who assumed power in late 2024 after ousting Bashar al-Assad. This followed an Israeli airstrike on the Syrian Ministry of Defense and attacks near the presidential palace in Damascus in July 2025. Netanyahu described the call as brief and tense, which led to a cessation of military operations against the Druze in Syria, particularly in Sweida, where Israel had been defending the Druze amid the sectarian conflict. Currently, negotiations between Israel and Syria are focused on a security agreement, with Syria demanding the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the buffer zone—a demand Israel refuses to meet.
