Al-Zein Calls for Ecosystem Revival in Lebanon
Lebanese Environment Minister Tamara Al-Zain confirmed that Lebanon, despite the significant challenges it faces, remains firmly committed to environmental efforts. In her speech at the Biodiversity Summit in Armenia, she emphasized the importance of integrating ecosystem restoration into post-war reconstruction efforts, especially given that the repercussions of conflicts and wars—including Israel's bombings of Lebanese environments—have led to the destruction or deterioration of thousands of hectares of forests and agricultural lands. Environmental losses have exceeded $512 million according to the World Bank for 2023 and 2024, and these damages continue to worsen. She pointed out that protecting biodiversity is essential for food security, health, and climate change adaptation. Lebanon has made progress in areas such as environmental governance, climate planning, and waste management. She affirmed that making ecosystem restoration a central component of reconstruction contributes to achieving sustainable development. She called on partners to support these efforts and to promote the country's environmental revival, aiming for recovery and the preservation of its rich natural heritage.
