Priest’s Death and Islamic Blessing
The Catholic priest Patricio Sánchez died in southwestern Ecuador when a large wooden cross fell on him during a live streamed Mass via social media. The incident is considered a workplace accident and is not linked to divine will. Negative comments on social media focused on schadenfreude over the death, without showing mercy. Similar incidents have occurred in the Muslim world as well, including a crane collapse in Mecca during the Hajj season that resulted in hundreds of deaths, along with stampedes and other disasters. These events highlight that such accidents happen worldwide without distinction and are not related to what some call "divine grace" or "divine punishment."
