Al-Zein Urges Support for Lebanon Climate Efforts
Lebanese Environment Minister Tamara Al-Zein confirmed that the war on Lebanon has caused environmental and climatic damages that hinder the country's efforts to reduce and adapt to climate change. She pointed out that emissions linked to the war and reconstruction amount to approximately 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide, not including the climate cost of manufacturing and importing weapons, highlighting the lack of data from producing entities. She emphasized the need for international support to compensate Lebanon for these damages and to provide the necessary funding for reconstruction and recovery, especially amidst economic challenges and accumulated hardships. She stated that implementing Lebanon's climate plan until 2035 requires around 13 billion dollars, a sum difficult to secure under current circumstances. The greatest challenge remains turning commitments into actual implementation despite limited resources. She called for developing more flexible funding mechanisms to ensure faster responses to crises, institutionalizing climate actions within government agencies, and strengthening cooperation with the European Union to support environmental policies and expand the use of solar energy, all of which would enhance Lebanon's recovery and resilience efforts.
