Saudi Arabia has launched a national policy to improve healthcare and rehabilitation services for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. The goal is to promote early detection, standardize diagnostic and treatment pathways, and achieve a comprehensive assessment of the condition from early screening through adulthood. The policy mandates healthcare providers to offer early intervention programs for children under six years old, including behavioral analysis, speech, and occupational therapy, totaling 20 hours weekly for a minimum of two years, with individualized treatment plans reviewed every three months. It also emphasizes the provision of integrated therapeutic and diagnostic services, community integration and rehabilitation programs for children and youth, ensuring a smooth transition of care after age 18, and offering specialized support for cases with severe behavioral disorders. Additionally, the policy encourages early detection through the establishment of specialized clinics and genetic analysis. It underlines strict governance, including performance evaluation based on indicators such as the availability of multidisciplinary teams in health facilities and continuous monitoring of implementation and challenges during the first three years.
