Lebanon Faces Corruption and Weapon Conflicts
The article discusses the relationship between armed corruption and clientelism in Lebanon, illustrating how politicians have exploited the sectarian system of governance to serve their interests. State institutions have been transformed into tools for clientelism and political patronage, with a constitutional protection of illegal weapons—particularly Hezbollah's weapons, which have gained international legitimacy and received support to expand their influence both domestically and abroad. This has led to stalled reforms and the accumulation of financial and economic crises, as a interconnected system has emerged that combines the monopolization of power with clientelism. Such a system makes it difficult to reform the sectarian regime and threatens its stability, as political forces continue to safeguard their interests through the intertwined relationship between weapons and corruption.
