Francesco Totti, the former captain of AS Roma, revealed that he preferred taking on a role as an advisor for Maxima Roma's basketball team rather than contributing to the rebuilding of Italy's national football team, which is suffering from a crisis after failing to qualify for the World Cup. After ending his playing career in 2017, Totti joined the basketball project's effort to participate in the NBA Europe League, which will feature teams from the capitals and major cities across the continent starting in 2027. Totti explained that his choice of this field was because he feels he is given significance and that he feels part of the project, unlike Italian football, which has lacked elite league teams since 2020. This step comes as part of Maxima Roma's broader strategy to expand into basketball in Italy, with both clubs aiming to join the NBA Europe League project.
