Syrian league begins historic season
The Syrian football league's 56th season kicks off with the participation of 14 teams, allowing the signing of four foreign professionals excluding goalkeepers. Veteran striker Omar Al Soma returns to domestic competitions after a 15-year absence since his departure from Al Fouta in 2011. The Al Ittihad of Aleppo and Al Karamah teams are leading the race for the title. For the first time, the Qamishli team is participating. The number of foreign professionals reaches about 70 players, most of whom are from Africa. Romanian coach Tita Valiariu is also coaching Al Ittihad of Aleppo. Most clubs rely on Syrian coaches. The season begins with matches across several cities, though some clubs have lodged protests regarding the match schedule. Al Soma returns to the league after a distinguished career in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait, where he scored 193 goals with Al Ahli Saudi. He is considered one of the most prominent players in the region.
