FIFA reports rise in online abuse against players and coaches
The International Football Federation (FIFA) revealed that more than half of the players, coaches, and officials who used the online abuse protection service during the 2026 World Cup experienced cyber abuse, with 812 out of 1,606 individuals receiving at least one abusive message. Data showed that racism accounted for 12% of the abuse cases, rising to 20% when excluding general insults, with the most targeted individual receiving over 10,000 offensive posts, approximately 40% of which were racist in nature. Additionally, 17.1 million posts and comments were analyzed, with around 240,000 instances of abuse identified through manual review. A total of 2,905 accounts were referred for investigation, and 9.2 million comments were blocked to remove abusive and spam messages.
