The article focuses on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party's move toward tightening its policies against Syrians, particularly in the context of the upcoming elections scheduled for September 2026. The party opposes granting citizenship to Syrians and calls for a reconsideration of their protected status, emphasizing the need for deportation to Syria once the reasons for protection cease to exist, while avoiding excessive forced mass deportations. Although the party's official documents reject arbitrary or mass deportations, it seeks to facilitate voluntary returns and create a more flexible legal and political environment for the repatriation of Syrians. The party also demands stricter asylum procedures, reducing incentives, and increasing police powers in deportation operations, with a focus on building support in eastern Germany to potentially gain political control.
