More than three decades after Germany's reunification, divisions between the East and West are clearly evident in the elections of the eastern Saxony-Anhalt district. Polls indicate the possibility of the "Alternative for Germany" party, an anti-immigration party with links to Moscow, winning an outright majority for the first time in a local election, which would set a precedent for an ultra-right party in Germany's post-war history. This reflects the influence of the region's historical and cultural legacy, where the effects of the collapse of the German Democratic Republic are still visible in wage levels, employment rates, and voter concerns, alongside ongoing feelings of resentment and hostility toward foreigners—particularly Syrian and Afghan refugees. The party also exploits anti-Western sentiments, calling for closer ties with Russia despite the Ukrainian invasion, and emphasizes the importance of not reducing financial support for the East to avoid reinforcing a victim mentality. The rise of the party underscores fears of political and social changes in the region and serves as a barometer for political shifts across Germany as a whole.
