Government investigators subjected approximately 50 members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to lie detector tests to investigate the leaking of classified information concerning U.S. ammunition stockpiles during the war with Iran, including details about the depletion of long-range missiles and Patriot systems. This step comes after media reports indicated a significant shortage in these stockpiles, and the tests were conducted in August to deter the transfer of information to the media, especially amid escalating tensions with Iran. The use of lie detector tests on this scale is unprecedented, and the government emphasizes that protecting classified information is vital to national security, while criticism of the Defense Secretary’s management continues to grow.
