Red meat costs outpacing affordability
Syria is facing a crisis in red meat prices, as costs have risen significantly due to a decline in livestock and increased export rates. This has led to a shortage in supply and higher prices in the local market. Data shows a decrease in sheep numbers from over 18 million heads before 2011 to approximately 14 million now, amid ongoing rises in production costs and the ongoing trading of sheep within the framework of market needs and government regulations. These factors have contributed to a decline in citizens' purchasing power, with meat prices exceeding most families' ability to buy, especially during the Eid al-Adha season. Meanwhile, experts are working to develop strategies aimed at balancing exports with meeting local demand.
