WhatsApp Addresses Fraud Worries Before Usernames Launch
WhatsApp has defended the new username feature, which aims to enable communication without the need to share a phone number. The feature ensures the protection of sensitive usernames and prohibits their use in scams or identity theft. Measures include safeguarding official names, reducing verification opportunities through a well-controlled platform, imposing limits on new contacts, and implementing systems to monitor suspicious activity. The feature will be rolled out gradually, and the phone number will still be required to create an account, while user awareness about protection against scams will be further strengthened.
