YouTube to overhaul view counting
YouTube is preparing to implement a significant change in how it counts views on its platform. Starting immediately after the video begins playing and the first frame appears, a view will be registered, without the need to watch a specific amount of time. This adjustment aims to make it easier to measure metrics and provide content creators with a clearer picture of their videos' reach, while maintaining a separate metric called "Engaged Views" for interactive viewing. The new policy will take effect on August 24, 2026, and will apply to all types of content, including long videos, Shorts, and live streams. This change is expected to cause a rapid increase in view counts, especially for videos that viewers watch for only a short period. Importantly, this update will not impact ad revenue or the monetization conditions within the YouTube Partner Program, as interaction metrics will continue to be measured independently—making the system more aligned with platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
