India protesters detained as Cockroach Party intensifies opposition
The article discusses the widespread protests that took place in New Delhi against the review process of the voter lists carried out by the Indian Election Commission. This process led to the removal of over 130 million names from the voter lists, with critics accusing the government of undermining transparency and leading to the suppression of opposition voices. In response, Indian authorities implemented strict security measures, including the detention of leaders from the "Cockroaches" party who organized the protests, a ban on gatherings, and restrictions on internet services. These measures significantly limited freedom of expression and the right to assemble. The protests pose a major challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, happening amid a political struggle over the legitimacy of the voter list review process and its potential impact on upcoming elections. Critics and opposition groups argue that the changes aim to disqualify dissenting voices and threaten Indian democracy.
