Botswana approves elephant hunting for Independence
The Botswana government has authorized the hunting of 23 elephants to celebrate Independence Day, a decision that has drawn criticism from environmental activists. The government justifies this by stating that hunting quotas are necessary to manage the large elephant populations, estimated at around 130,000 elephants, and to reduce human-wildlife conflicts, especially in rural areas. However, elephant conservation organizations have warned that this decision could increase hostility among herds and lead to violent confrontations with local residents.
