Trump issues order excluding Russia from sanctions
President Donald Trump issued an executive order exempting Russia from the sanctions imposed by the law previously enacted by Congress, declaring that this achieves the "national interest" of the United States. This measure aims to suspend the sanctions and tariffs targeting the Russian energy and defense sectors, as well as high-ranking officials such as President Vladimir Putin, and the "shadow fleet" of Russian oil tankers that help circumvent Western sanctions. This comes amid indications of a rapprochement between Trump and Moscow, following previous criticisms and statements regarding Ukraine, along with Washington's decision to purchase Russian diesel to help reduce global energy prices, raising concerns about the impact on international energy trade, especially with major Russian oil importers like India.
