Italy enforces strict security after protests
Italy has approved strict security measures following unrest in northern parts of the country. These measures include criminalizing violence during demonstrations, with penalties of up to five years in prison and a fine of 20,000 euros for those involved in riots. Police powers have also been expanded to allow the detention of minors, and military presence in Milan has been increased until the end of 2026. These actions come in response to acts of vandalism and attacks on police forces in cities like Milan. The government's strong reaction reflects its response to the escalating violence associated with recent popular protests in France and regional protests in the south over rising living costs.
