Europe summer 2026 heat kills 50,000
A study reported that the intense heatwave that struck Europe during the summer of 2026 resulted in over 50,000 deaths, representing a 71% increase compared to the summer of 2022, which recorded 29,480 deaths. The analysis covered 854 European cities, accounting for approximately 40% of the continent's population, with a note that the actual numbers might be higher since the heatwave in May was not included. The study indicated that in some areas, temperatures were 12 degrees Celsius above the normal average. One-third of the deaths occurred between June 17 and July 1 during a heatwave that exceeded the usual temperatures by 5.3 degrees. The study confirmed that Italy, France, Spain, and Germany recorded the highest death tolls, with an increase in fatalities also observed in Europe's capital cities, Rome and London, compared to previous periods.
