The town of Ein Menin in the Rif Dimashq countryside experienced tension on Friday and Saturday night following protests against excavation work carried out by the Water Authority to enhance the water supply to the town of Tall, which is suffering from a severe water crisis. The escalating protests led to clashes with security forces, who fired bullets to disperse the protesters, resulting in injuries and arrests. In response, protesters bricked up the wells, disrupted excavation operations, and blocked roads with burning tires to prevent security advances. The crisis is rooted in the political influence over the distribution of water resources, as the town of Tall relies on more than 17 wells, compared to only four in Ein Menin—most of which are located on private land—exacerbing discrimination and tension in the region. The town calls for the enforcement of water laws that prioritize drinking water, amid the government's inability to meet the increasing demand, with ongoing unrest and acts of sabotage by protesters.
