Hungary shuts sole nuclear plant over Danube water levels
Hungary has announced the closure of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant for the first time since it was commissioned 44 years ago, due to the low water levels of the Danube River caused by an ongoing European drought and temperatures reaching up to 42°C. This has led to the shutdown of one reactor, with the imminent shutdown of the last reactor, which reduces electricity production by more than 50% and threatens the country’s energy supply, as it depends on the plant for 40% of its electricity. In response, Hungary is increasing electricity imports and is asking industries to voluntarily reduce their consumption to avoid mandatory cuts.
