Ceuta Amid Political and Humanitarian Challenges
The borders of Ceuta, under Spanish control, have witnessed a significant mass influx of migrants from Moroccan territory. Thousands have crossed the sea and land from Morocco in the latest wave since the 2021 crisis, reigniting humanitarian and political challenges at European borders. These crossings, believed to be orchestrated by Morocco to pressure Spain in response to its reception of Polisario Front leader Ibrahim Ghali for treatment, are among the largest mass crossings since then and exemplify "coerced engineered migration." The migrants, primarily from Morocco, Algeria, and Guinea Conakry, face harsh living conditions within Ceuta, where the prices of goods have risen and shops have closed. The sudden surge has led to the closure of workplaces and heightened tensions among residents. Most attempt to reach their destination by swimming or climbing walls, with some choosing to retreat upon encountering obstacles, all while this strategy continues to be used as a form of political or military leverage.
