Egyptian Parliament Opposes Electricity Price Hike
The Egyptian government plans to increase residential electricity prices by 12% across all tiers, while keeping the first tier unchanged, in order to ensure the sustainability and financial stability of the electricity system. However, the decision has faced widespread rejection and intensive parliamentary efforts, as deputies have emphasized that the increase comes at a time when citizens are suffering from rising prices and declining purchasing power. Additionally, security incidents at the Port of Damietta may impact electricity supplies during the summer. Despite the parliamentary recess, deputies continue to pressure to prevent the reversal of this decision. Experts, however, expect that the government will not back down, viewing such a move as a way to avoid demonstrating weakness or admitting mistakes. These actions are seen as a reflection of widespread popular anger over the continuous rise in prices.
