Baghdad urges Iran to permit oil transit
Iraq is facing a severe financial crisis due to the suspension of its oil exports. Iraqi officials have indicated that Iran does not allow oil shipments to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, despite Baghdad receiving promises from Iran of exceptions for these exports. The closure of the strait is a result of Iran's stance aimed at promoting its own interests and exerting strategic pressure amid regional tensions. Baghdad, in turn, accuses Iran of attempting to impose control and profit from the tense political situation. Iraq is at risk of significant financial deficit, as its oil exports have plummeted from 3.5 million barrels per day before the war to less than 32 million barrels in May and June alone, generating revenues of over $2.3 billion. This raises the likelihood of bankruptcy if the crisis continues. The statements from officials confirm that tensions exist in Iraqi-Iranian relations, with accusations that Iran is neglecting Iraq’s interests and exploiting its geographic and economic position to achieve its own goals.
