Milie’s remarks strain Brazil-Argentina ties
Brazil has downgraded its diplomatic representation in Argentina to the level of chargé d'affaires in response to Argentine President Javier Milei's attack on his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, describing him as a "former convict, thief, and corrupt." Brazil informed Argentina that it would be managed at this level, and its ambassador to Argentina will not return to Buenos Aires, while the Argentine government confirmed that Brasília requested its ambassador's departure, marking the first such move between the two countries. This step follows repeated insults and tense relations since Milei took office in December 2023, with the Brazilian president not commenting on the statements.
