China announces new autonomous vehicle safety standards
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the issuance of a mandatory national standard for the safety of autonomous vehicle driving systems at Levels 3 and 4, which will be implemented starting July 1, 2027. The standard aims to improve safety assurance procedures throughout the vehicle lifecycle, emphasizing the need for simulation and on-road testing during system development. It also seeks to enhance human-machine interaction capabilities and alert drivers to prevent misuse. Additionally, the standard requires vehicles to be capable of monitoring the driver's readiness to take control, while adhering to specific standards to ensure the sustainable and safe development of autonomous vehicles in China.
